Entrepreneurial Forum - 2009 Breakfast Series - Paul L.H. Olson CEO & President, nuBridges Command-and-control leadership styles. Arrogance, greed and selfishness. Careers defined by stock options, promotions and richly funded retirements. These are common traits and philosophies of “business leaders” like Bernie Madoff, Bernie Ebbers and Dennis Koslowski and look where they are today. Behind bars. According to Paul Olson, we do not need executives running corporations into the ground in search of personal gain. What’s needed is authentic leaders -- people of the highest integrity, committed to building enduring organizations where arrogance takes a back seat to humility. Greed is replaced with integrity. And selfishness is trumped by the genuine desire to serve others for the common good. Paul advocates the adoption of servant-leadership as part of our corporate philosophies. He has practiced servant-leadership for his 30+ years as a leader on the gridiron and in the boardroom and will share the top 10 servant-leadership lessons that he’s learned and put into practice. To make these lessons come to life, Paul will present a number of colorful anecdotes sprinkled with some very intriguing characters, including his good friend Tony Dungy. Previously, Paul was a founding executive officer of Sterling Commerce, a major pacesetter in global e-commerce. In just over five years, as Group President, his leadership contributed to explosive growth resulting in 40,000 customers in 35 countries and revenue topping $600 million. In early 2000, AT&T (SBC Communications) acquired the business for nearly $4 billion. After the acquisition, Paul joined the leadership team at Bethel University in St. Paul, Minnesota, where he served as executive vice president. He also served the Minnesota Vikings as a front office executive and was an early innovator in the use of information technology for game analysis and strategy. Paul holds a doctorate in Higher Education Management from the University of Pennsylvania, an MBA from the University of St. Thomas and a BA in Mathematics from Macalester College.
